IMT - Birds

Here is my response to the prompt "birds" at Inspire Me Thursday this week. I'm not very happy with how it turned out but as I spent so long on it, I decided to still post it here.
The bird is made up of lots of little feathers which I cut out of the painted paper above. It is a page of watercolour paper which I covered with brown, orange and gold washes. I've been making a few of these pages this weekend as possible backgrounds for artist trading cards (my new thing!). I really like the different shades, tones and patterns that form randomly when I make these.

After I'd cut all the little feather shapes out I stuck them all on to the bird I'd drawn. It took ages! I glued on a sequin for his eye and painted in his beak and feet.
I do like the bird its just the background I'm disappointed with, so perhaps if I think of a better idea I can cut him out and do another one.. any ideas?

THIS IS FABULOUS!!!!!!!! You are way to hard on yourself...the background and the BIRD are both FABULOUS! Great job...and it looks like it took a long time to do!

I love this bird! Before I read how you did this I wondered why the bird looked almost realistic. What patience it had to take to do this!
And I also like the delicate branches and blossoms.

Sorry, I am a newbie at all of this, so no ideas here.

I'm new to IMT - having fun visiting everyones blog to see their art.

I think the bird and background and wonderful. I wouldn't cut out a thing. But I understand personal dissatisfaction with one's work. It's not entirely uncommon for me to take a hammer to a piece and start again. If it pushes you to grow because you know you can do better then okay... but if it's just self doubt it's unnecessary. Your work is wonderful. That’s my 2cents anyway.

I wouldn't change a thing about it, I love the texture of the bird and the delicate background is a lovely contrast. It's beautiful

I can't at all imagine why you are disappointed with this piece. It is quite lovely. Great work indeed.

I have done pieces that involve lots of little hand built repetitive things, and I know how it is to do something like that and then it doesn't wow me. But I agree with everyone else on this one. I think it is a cool piece. I love the way the bird has a 3d feel.

This is SO STUNNING. Love all the feathers you cut out. It must have taken ages, but it shows.

Omigoodness! This is amazing and I can only imagine how much time it took you to cute and paste those tiny little feathers.

I love how impressionistic and textured the background is too.
